Hazardous substances

How much hazardous material did we buy, from whom, and where did it go?

The moment

Sound familiar?

The HSE request

HSE asks for a list of every hazardous substance bought last year. Most of it came from a general wholesaler, mixed in with cable ties and screws.

The single line

A can of solvent is one line on a large invoice, and nobody has gone through those lines.

The unknown products

Safety data sheets exist for the products the company knows about. The question is which ones it does not know about.

Why it's hard today

The answer sits at invoice line level. The name of a general wholesaler does not say that it sells solvents, aerosols and adhesives. One supplier delivers across many categories, so the hazardous lines hide inside everything else.

€500,000of hazardous substances sat unidentified in one data set, bought from a supplier that mainly delivers something else

Hazardous products often sit inside general wholesaler invoices. Reading every line finds them.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do you list all the hazardous substances a company buys?

Read every invoice line and identify which products are hazardous, then group them by supplier and site. Pearstop does this line by line, including lines from general wholesalers where a solvent sits next to cable ties.

How do you find chemicals in procurement data?

Classify the data at item level. Supplier names say little about what a supplier sells, so the chemicals only show once each line is identified. Pearstop identifies every line and flags the hazardous ones.

How do you check safety data sheets against purchases?

Start from a complete list of hazardous products bought, per supplier and site, then compare it with the safety data sheets on file. Pearstop delivers that list, so the products without a sheet stand out.

Why are hazardous substances missing from supplier-level spend reports?

A supplier-level report assigns all spend to the supplier's main category. A wholesaler that mainly supplies fixings shows as fixings, and the solvents inside it disappear. Pearstop reports at line level, so they appear.

Can hazardous products from a general wholesaler be identified?

Yes. Pearstop reads and classifies every invoice line, so a single can of solvent on a large wholesaler invoice is identified like any other item.

Send us a sample of your wholesaler invoices
